Hurricane Katrina formed in the Bahamas and gained strength as it move into the Gulf of Mexico. It caused major devastation on the coast of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Most notably, the city of New Orleans sustained heavy damage, in large part due to the levee system breaking down and large areas of the city being flooded. It is estimated that Katrina caused $75 billion in damage.
